Using your prescribed inhalers correctly is the number one thing you can do to keep your asthma in check. Whether you take inhalers preventatively or for relief needed in the moment using them as recommended is important. Do not stop taking them after your symptoms subside, because they will only flare up again.
Not all medications are asthma compatible, you should always check before taking any new medication. Don’t smoke, smoking exacerbates symptoms. Stopping or cutting down can reduce the severity of your asthma. A lot of people with asthma avoid physical exercise fearing that it will make it worse or cause an asthma attack however exercise should not affect your asthma if you are on proper treatment. In fact, exercise and improving your fitness, in general, can lead to a decline in your asthma. Vaccinations are also very important for asthma sufferers, things like the flu can be a lot worse for people with asthma- your GP should inform you of any necessary vaccinations.
You should work on identifying your triggers; make a note of where you are and what you’re doing when your symptoms flare up. It can be almost impossible to avoid but some triggers such as dust mites can be dealt with by getting rid of them in your own space and limiting exposure to them in others. Cold weather is also a common trigger for asthma sufferers, but symptoms can be controlled if you carry your reliever inhaler and take your preventative inhaler. Keep warm and dry as much as possible. Wrapping a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth will warm up the air before you breathe it or breathing through your nose helps to warm up the air before it hits your lungs. If you do find that you are more reliant on your reliever inhaler you should speak to your GP.
As the summer approaches, you should consider taking precautions when travelling with asthma. Ensure that you have a surplus of your asthma medicine – it’s better to have too much than to run out. Make sure it is always with you if you are flying, keep it in your hand luggage; the last thing you need is to reach your destination and find that the airline has lost your bags.
Finally, people with chronic health conditions such as asthma can experience mental health difficulties such as depression or anxiety. If you are experiencing any of these feelings, it’s important to have a support system in place, like a patient support group or your friends and family. Talking to your GP if you are feeling like this is a step toward the right treatment for you.
