Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 or IGF-1 is produced in the liver. This hormone, also known as Somatomedin C is called insulin-like because it shares a similar molecular structure with Insulin. IGF-1 is produced as a response to stimulus received due to growth hormone, which is formed in the pituitary gland. IGF-1 is secreted in certain levels throughout the life. The secretion of growth hormones, in the pituitary glands, decreases with time, just like most other hormones in the body. Protein ingestion in adequate amounts can increase the IGH-1 levels in the body

Insulin-like growth factor levels can be influenced by many things, which include weight, exercise, stress, age, nutrition intake as well as medical conditions and diseases. The secretion of this hormone also increases or decreases throughout the day, as does the growth hormone levels. The secretion of growth hormone takes place in the pituitary gland; it then stimulates the liver and makes it produce IGF-1. This hormone triggers which then triggers cell growth throughout the body. The research into hormone roles helps growth of skeletal cells, liver and kidney cells, naming a few. IGF-1 has also been researched because it stimulates the formation of nerve cells and DNA.
The Role of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 in the Body
The hormone binds itself with cellular structures, turning its main action mechanism same as insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R). As an example, tyrosine kinase, a receptor, after binding with IGF-1 receptors, starts signaling between cells. AKT signaling pathways, which are very important for cell growth, are initiated by this hormone. The effect of this hormone has been extensively studied on different animals and vitro and vivo studies have been done. The questions regarding different effects of this hormone on humans can be answered by these studies. Although the secretion of this hormone is handled by the liver, any pituitary gland sickness can also affect it.
Deficiency Effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor
Because the secretion of insulation-like growth factor-1 is directly linked with the secretion of growth hormone in the pituitary gland, the rate of formation of IGH-1 can be hampered by any pituitary infection. A number of studies are still being conducted on the reason behind low levels of insulin-like growth factor. A recent study has shown that age-related changes in the functions of cells and tissue is have a direct link with the low levels of growth hormone and IGF-1 and anabolic hormones. A huge number of researches have been conducted on the effect IGF-1 has on muscles and bone development.
A Journal of Anatomy article has published a study which determined that, when the growth hormone is administered for about 28 days in older animals, it can stimulate muscle growth. Based on the research into hormone roles the study also stated that growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) reduced the rate at which memory and spatial awareness functions declined in the brain. Insulin-like growth factor-1 is an integral part of maintaining the functions in a human body.
